Bereavement Boxes

"To grant to those who mourn in Zion, to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified."

Isaiah 61:3

When a family learns that they are expecting a new member in their family, their hearts prepare, they are filled with love, and plans are made. The news that a baby has passed away in a mother's womb is devastating- their plans now change and now they must navigate the world of love and loss.

Families can thrive when surrounded by love and support during these difficult times.

Humble Mission supports families by offering emotional and spiritual support, Bereavement Boxes/Miscarriage kits, and resources about how to proceed after a miscarriage (including burial resources.)

We are here.

About the Boxes

A box for when the first face a child sees is the face of Jesus.

This box that is intended to be used as a memory box to hold keepsakes related to the precious baby that passed away.

Inside the box are items that may be used to help a mother retrieve the remains of her baby if she and her healthcare providers feel it is appropriate for her to miscarry at home.

These boxes are not meant to replace any medical care or advice provided by medical professionals. These kits allow mothers a way to retrieve the remains of their babies for burial.

To find gifts and items to honor the life of the baby, please visit our shop.

The items in this box include materials to meet the mother’s spiritual and physical needs.

When the box is opened, a small prayer card with the words of St Zelie lay atop the kit and it is the first item the mothers see: “We shall find our little ones again up above. -St Zelie”

The kits include the following items and an explanation for what’s included and why.

This list is included in each box and the items are clearly labeled to help orient the mother to the contents.

“What’s included in the kit and why:

•Epsom Salt-  Prior to the onset of the miscarriage, we encourage mothers to take Epsom Salt Soaks. These soaks not only soothe the body but provide the ideal opportunity to relax in a warm bath, quiet the mind, and rest. An Epsom Salt soak is an easy way to replenish magnesium, which soothes sore muscles and helps speed recovery.

Directions: Add 2 cups of Epsom Salt Soak to a warm bath, and soak for at least 20 minutes. For best results, soak at least twice per week.

A bath is a nice time to “Be still” and trust.

•Twinkle lights

To hang in your bathroom with lights dimmed while you bathe to encourage your body to relax. Pray, rest, and say goodbye. This process helps the miscarriage to begin.

•Floradix Iron Supplement
To help replenish your iron levels and give you some extra energy.

•Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
To encourage labor and tone the uterus after delivery.

•Heavy Maxi Pads (Do not use Tampons)

•2 Absorbent Pad Sheets (aka Chux pads)
To use in the bathroom to keep your floor clean or on any surface (your bed, etc) where you are concerned about blood stains.

•Rubber Gloves
(2 pairs. Purple is size small. Blue is size large.)

•Ziplock bags (explanation included in the notes below.)

•Strainer
If you would like to find the remains of your baby.

•Gauze
To hold the remains (More about this process below.)

•White Cloth
To wrap the baby.

Suggested use of kit if you’d like to find your baby:
Lay paper plates, tin foil, or wax paper on the back of your toilet and set out several piles of gauze on top of the plates.

To find your baby, place the strainer below you while you use the bathroom and strain all urine, blood, and clots. After you have finished using the bathroom, gently rinse the contents of the colander with room temperature water.
Discern and distinguish blood clots from placenta, sack, cord, and baby. It may be hard to tell the difference between these parts. Please understand that your baby may not look the same as images online of babies at this particular gestational age due to chromosomal abnormalities or decomposition that may have begun.
This process may take several trips to the bathroom or it may happen all at once.

You may place the remains you find on the gauze and rest the colander on the plates/wax paper in between uses.

If you find the baby, rinse it gently under slow running, room temperature water. Do not wipe it with toilet paper- the toilet tissue paper will stick to the baby and be hard to remove.  Instead, set the baby on the gauze that you’ve placed on the paper plates/wax paper.

Name your baby.

Take Photographs.

Spend time with your baby. Make memories.

When it feels right to your heart, place the gauze and the baby inside the enclosed cloth (or a cloth of your choosing) and carefully place them within the ziplock bag. Including the gauze with the baby will help to absorb any extra fluid and keep the baby’s body supported within the cloth.

Keep the contents in a refrigerator until time of burial. (There are many options available for burial. See the enclosed brochure for A MOM’s Peace or contact Alison at Humble Mission for more information about handling your baby’s remains and burial options.)

If you do not find the baby, clean the strainer and let it air dry. Rinse or discard the gloves, and place the colander on the back of the toilet on paper plates/wax paper or in the enclosed zip lock bag until the next trip to the bathroom. Start the process again on the next trip to the bathroom.

If you are unable to identify the baby and flushing is unavoidable, consider writing a note or saying a prayer with the flushes. You can chose to bury all that is delivered, even if you chose not to see your baby.

If you are having genetic testing, put the placenta in the small zip lock bag, and refrigerate until you can bring it to the hospital.

This box may be used as a memory box to store items you have received or things that remind you of this precious baby. Some mothers save ultrasound photos, pictures, gifts, cards, or anything that is sentimental or reminds them of their little one.

Each box is free.
All of the contents in the boxes have either been gifted or purchased with a portion of the proceeds from our shop.
